Staking Claims
You claim you are my friend
Then why would you want to take my rights away?
Or vote for those who threaten
Everything we've worked so hard to overcome?
You are afraid
That I may be right
If I am, would that be so bad?
Would it be so wrong
if loved trumped hate,
and I gave you a big bear embrace,
or would you rather see me crying?
You have a right to feel the way you feel
You don't have the right to take away
My well being or my peace of mind
The side that's winning isn't always the side that's right
How could you be so blind as not to see that?
I may just be a woman to you
I am a minority in the majority
But I am more than my gender and skin
I really stand out, don't I?
So why must we argue about things long and gone?
Are you so afraid I'll make sense
And you might be wrong?
You claim to be my friend
And then kick me when I am down
You've got some nerve
To keep coming 'round
I stake this claim
In the name of all of those out there still fighting
Someday I hope you'll understand my point of view
I'll wave my flag free and proud
For those who came before me are screaming aloud
This revolution isn't over, my friend
We've come so far and love will win in the end.
