"Off-Sides Poetry" is the theme for Super Poem Sunday. This event is geared towards people of all ages who may want a fun alternative to watching football. With this said, the event will end early enough so that all who wish to watch the Super Bowl can do so.
The afternoon will start with a three minute allotment for contestants during the slam to perform works from others, or their own if they so choose. In the past there have been about 75 attendees. If time allows, the event will go into overtime, and participants will have the chance to take part in more fun poetry games and activities.
The idea is to evoke the feel of a poetry "slam" without the confines of all the traditional rules.Clare Ultimo of Nuyorican Poetry Cafe (where poetry slams began) said ,"A willingness to soil elevated poetic hands with he sport of scores, decimal points and digits defines the Poetry Slam." These 'ugly' elements are exactly what make slams accessible to broad audiences.
The audience will also have a chance to be involved as judges, or cheer with the LIPC cheerleaders at the half time show! To add to the idea of competition, there we also be raffles, including a 50/50 raffle and monetary prize to the best original slam performance! Heroes and drinks will also be provided to those in attendance to keep that Super Bowl feeling alive.
“This is a great way to enjoy the atmosphere of Super Bowl Sunday,” said Douglas G. Swezey, a member of LIPC’s Board of Directors. “At this event, there will be no lopsided, blow-out scores or off-color commercials, no relentless time-outs, or boring commentary - only the excitement captured through the performance of words! Last year’s event was a huge success, and we want to continue that tradition.”
There will be a $10 donation, $7 for LIPC members, requested to join us, which includes food and beverages.
